If you like the darkness, fiery flames and hot women this is the video for you.
The winter months and black metal will always go hand in hand for me. There’s something about the shorter days, dropping temperatures and desolate landscapes that makes it the perfect escape from a frigid reality.
In Chicago, we managed to doge the frosty bullet. The new year came and went without so much as a snowflake but this past weekend old man winter fucked us good. I’ll admit I was happy. I broke out some whisky and started up my snowblower, in my earbuds was black metal. While I normally select Immortal, Naglfar or Emperor, that night I decided a little ‘Black And Roll’ was in order. I settled on Satyricon’s 2006 masterpiece Now, Diabolical.
Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band whose origins date back to 1991. Satyr (Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven) and Frost (Kjetil-Vidar “Frost” Haraldstad) have been the band’s only permanent members since 1993. The group’s first three albums follow the Norwegian black metal style but subsequent efforts have strayed from that formula, incorporating traditional heavy metal elements.
Black metal videos are rare, the aggression is somehow lost in translation but Satyricon’s “The Pentagram Burns” is a solid exception. The visual onslaught flows as freely as blood from a mortal wound.
A performance offering with some fiendish theatrics woven in, this effort has the replay ability of a medieval massacre set on slow motion. If you like the darkness, fiery flames and hot women this is the video for you. When you add a pummeling melody that is catchy as hell, this exercise in blasphemy seemingly has all.
As these frosty months continue on, I urge you to let Satyricon’s pentagram burn for you! \m/
