Oceans Of Slumber is a progressive metal band from Houston, Texas which was formed in 2011.

So far, the band has released an EP (Blue – 2014) and three full length efforts (Aetherial2013, Winter – 2016 & The Banished Heart 2018).

A new offering, Oceans Of Slumber is set to be unveiled on September 4th via Century Media Records.

While the music video for the song “Strange Fruit” has nothing to do with their upcoming effort, I found the track frighteningly timely. I was unaware of the song’s history and subject matter. “Strange Fruit” is a cover version of a jazz standard made popular by the famed lounge singer, Billie Holiday, back in 1939. The song is about the lynching of blacks in America.

If you thought the original version was dark, wait until you listen to Cammie Gilbert‘s vocals. A sorrowful rendition with a haunting vibe. Intricately laced with modern elements, this performance offering is powerfully hypnotic. A meaningful tale told in a memorable way.

I am thankful a song like this still lives in the modern world, it needs to be heard. I’m a fan of Oceans Of Slumber. I respect them for channeling their emotions and doing something different with it. \m/
