I was back in California last week on business and I realized I was just a few miles away from Dublin, CA home of Chuck Billy (Testament) and his infamous thrash band Dublin Death Patrol.

I decided to check out the area and found myself at the local Half Price Books. Perusing the clearance section I came across A Very Brutal Christmas, by another thrash act known as Austrian Death Machine. It was a three-song offering: “Jingle Bells”, “Get to the Choppa” and “Hell Bent for Leather” (Judas Priest cover). Intrigued, I made my purchase and flew back to Chicago.

Austrian Death Machine is a side project of As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis. A parody act, created as a tribute to Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. The group was founded in 2008 and it is still active today although they haven’t released any new material since 2014’s Triple Brutal.

I jumped on YouTube to see if they had any music videos and was shocked to discover there was an offering for “Get to the Choppa”! This video is a stop motion masterpiece of brutality.

I never knew this band existed before this EP purchase. I was familiar with the As I Lay Dying vocalist and was a fan of 2007’s An Ocean Between Us but I lost touch with the band when Lambesis went to prison for solicitation of murder.

Judgment of personal/life decisions aside, Austrian Death Machine is quality metal and I hope I get the chance to experience more of it. If you’re a fan of heavy metal and the ‘80s action films of Schwarzenegger, check out “Get to the Choppa” and let the thrash metal vibe of Arnold brutalize you! \m/
