The atmospheric style that Abbath Doom Occulta infused into Immortal helped the group stand out. Now, he’s taking those elements into his own music and the war has just begun.
Continuing your career as a solo artist is never an easy task, especially if the group you are leaving behind is successful. You are forever tied to the music that made you recognizable. Your persona is preset, a set list pre-determined, but this apparent anchor can easily be turned into an asset if the artist becomes more than the figurehead of the band that once made them great.
We’ve seen this kind of musical metamorphosis work in the past but rarely in black metal and never on a scale as large as Abbath leaving the legendary black metal act, Immortal. Immortal has been a fixture in black metal since its inception. Although they don’t have the infamous pedigree of other Norwegian black metal acts they were revered just the same because they held their own musically. The atmospheric style that Abbath Doom Occulta infused into Immortal helped the group stand out. Now, he’s taking those elements into his own music and the war has just begun.
“Winterbane” is the first visual offering of Abbath the group and I like what I see. The guitar work, makeup and facial expressions that accompany the music are more or less in the vein of Immortal’s All Shall Fall. The visuals are as epic as the music, witchcraft and black magic on a grand stage. A satisfying storyline that leaves you wanting more.
If the idea behind a music video is to generate buzz about the new material “Winterbane” has done its job. I’m kicking myself in the ass for not seeing Abbath tour this album over the summer! Thankfully, I can still pick up the self-titled release.
There is also some satisfaction knowing the momentum will continue as a new Abbath video was released last month for the I’s song “Warriors”. Embarking on a solo career might be an uncertain transition but great material and strong visuals can definitely make that changeover go smoothly. \m/
