Moving from traditional wails to defiant screams, this vibrant intensity gives Under A Mourning Sky a lot of replay ability.
Riffocity is a thrash act from Greece that really took me by surprise. Active since 2013, the band released an EP (Disciples of the Storm) in 2016. A follow up effort, Under A Mourning Sky, was released earlier this year (March 3rd, 2017) via Soman Records.
Under A Mourning Sky offers a memorable blend of sound and aggression. The music has an epic quality, hinting at a subtle nod to the ancients. The execution is multi-textured, flowing between heavy metal and thrash, this is extremity with personality. A homage to classic structures of thrash when melody was superseded by high velocity and gratuitous complexity.
Like the soundtrack to a movie the songs take on individual personalities, there is little redundancy. The guitar work of Giorgos Lezkidis and Dimitris Kalaitzidis is scintillating. The solos are crisp and airy, the notes seemingly plucked out of thin air. The vocals of Thomas Trampouras serve as the true center piece of this audio onslaught. Moving from traditional wails to defiant screams, this vibrant intensity gives Under A Mourning Sky a lot of replay ability. Highlight tracks for me are: “Hail Thy Father”, “Fortunes Of Death”, “From Inside the Arrows Come”, “Perish Unloved” and Under A Mourning Sky”.
If you like old school thrash, heavy on vocals and melody then I urge you to check out Riffocity. This is an exciting debut effort, I urge you to take a trip under the morning sky and ride these memorable riffs into passages unknown… \m/
