Rise of the Dragon Empire is old school power metal at its finest, an uplift trek through Middle Earth. It’s like listening to George R.R. Martin or even J.R.R. Tolkien’s books come to life.
The origins of Power Metal can be traced back to Ronnie James Dio and the fantasy tales he penned for Rainbow. As the seasons change, I can’t help but wonder if there’s something about the summer months that seem to stir one’s imagination. Epic tales of creativity seem to gain new life when the weather reaches the temperature of a dragon’s breath.
Bloodbound is a heavy metal/power metal outfit from Sweden. The group has been active since 2004 and Rise of the Dragon Empire is the band’s 8th studio effort. The record was released back on March 22nd (2019) via AFM Records.
While the comparisons to Sabaton are not unfounded, stylistically this is more bang your head in a Dungeons and Dragons realm. The music has a more fantasy-oriented appeal, methodically uplifting choruses that are sure to please any fan of this genre. Highlight tracks for me are: “Rise of the Dragon Empire”, “Skyriders and Stormbringers”, “Giants of Heaven”, The Warlock’s Trail”, “A Blessing in Sorcery” and “Reign of Fire”.
