The musical proficiency is outstanding. The drums sound like an eighty caliber machine gun letting loose on an enemy. The riffs have a grandiose quality, epically enormous and equally evil.
Blood of the Wolf is quickly becoming one of my favorite death metal acts. The group is from Chicago and has been active since 2013. I first heard about this band last year when I saw them open for Marduk at The Forge (22 West Cass Street Joliet, IL).
I thought Blood of the Wolf showed a lot of promise. Their stage show was gritty and unforgiving. While picking up a copy of their debut effort: I: The Law of Retaliation, I ran into the drummer who turned out to be a personal friend! Rick Hernandez is a percussionist extraordinaire, handling the sticks for a number of Chicago bands including God Dementia and Withering Soul!
I: The Law of Retaliation turned out to be a kick ass effort. It even included a maniacal cover of Marduk’s “With Satan and Victorious Weapons” (Word Funeral – 2003). Needless to say I was looking forward to a follow-up. The new effort, II: Campaign of Extermination more than satisfied my expectations, it unraveled them.
The music of Blood of the Wolf is blackened death metal done right. The pacing is well thought out, the record has a flow that urges repeat listens. The musical proficiency is outstanding. The drums sound like an eighty caliber machine gun letting loose on an enemy. The riffs have a grandiose quality, epically enormous and equally evil. This is the vibe of a soldier, a rhythmic warrior out for blood. Highlight tracks for me are: “A Sermon of Slaughtered Souls”, “Erupting Volcanic Wrath”, “The Sword is my Light and Salvation” and “With Fire and a Thousand Flashing Blades”.
Black metal fused attacks typically make me think of the cold regions of the world but Blood of the Wolf does not. Invoking images of a desolate wasteland of sand and stone, the lifeblood appears black as steel cuts through bone in the desert moonlight. This music is as powerful as any blackened death metal that I’ve experienced. Check out this new campaign by Blood of the Wolf and let their fiendish style of music exterminate you! \m/
