“Our only hope to breathe again
To stop the madness closing in
What will we do when all is lost?
Environmental holocaust…”

Testament captured the feeling that mother nature was in distress all the way back in 1989 with these lyrics from their song “Greenhouse Effect”. The song speaks to the mindset of the corporate machine even today, driven by greed and the artificial desire to keep up with society’s standards.

Testament Late '80s

In 1986 it was believed by scientists that carbon dioxide was responsible for the warming of the planet, which has since been proven to be true. This is what is known as the greenhouse effect. The awareness of what we are doing to our planet was raised then in the late ’80s, while we are experiencing it now in 2017.

The greenhouse effect results when the amount of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere actually raises the temperature of the earth as a whole. Combined with deadly toxins being dumped into the waters and waste spewing into the air for decades, scientists and environmentalists have brought awareness only to watch the human species turn a blind eye, especially if it means making money easily.

The song “Greenhouse Effect” smashed through barriers. People took notice on how the rivers, lakes, and air were being destroyed daily. But as the industries demanded more, more was taken from the earth. This was back in the ’80s. Currently we are facing the same issues with bigger side effects. The ozone has a hole in it, the water we drink is polluted, and the air is toxin for our lungs. Yet the demand for materialistic belongings has never been higher.

Seal the Planet’s fate
Crimes they perpetrate
Wasting precious land
It’s time to take a stand
