Lizzy’s voice is without a doubt the highlight of this release. He hasn’t lost anything, belting out songs with the famed delivery we all know.
I’ve been following Lizzy Borden since 1985’s Love You to Pieces. I’ve always found his style of shock rock meets heavy metal highly addictive. In my mind, Lizzy’s pinnacle achievement will always be 1987’s Visual Lies. I actually saw Lizzy on that tour. It was the day after I attended Anthrax, Celtic Frost and Exodus at the Aragon Ballroom (1106 W. Lawrence Ave, Chicago, IL). Lizzy Borden and Shok Paris were playing the Cabaret Metro (3730 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL) and if you brought your Anthrax ticket stub to the show you got in for half price! The images I have of Lizzy climbing out of that foggy television set will be forever cemented in my mind.
Now, Lizzy Borden has returned! A new album entitled, My Midnight Things, is due out June 15th via Metal Blade Records. Lizzy’s first release since 2007’s Appointment with Death. This is a more mature version of Lizzy Borden. My Midnight Things could be considered a collection of heavy metal love songs. While these tracks aren’t exactly ballads, if you’re looking for “Notorious” part 2, this isn’t it. However, that doesn’t mean this album is subpar. My assessment is quite the contrary. Progression is the true driving force behind any style of music and we must remember Lizzy has been creeping around since 1983!
The guitar work on this effort is amazing, especially the solos, which seemingly tap directly into the emotion of the lyrics. However, Lizzy’s voice is without a doubt the highlight of this release. He hasn’t lost anything, belting out songs with the famed delivery we all know. Highlight tracks for me are: “My Midnight Things”, “Obsessed with You”, “A Stranger to Love” and “The Perfect Poison”.
While My Midnight Things might take multiple listens before it can be fully appreciated, if you invest the time you will be pleased. The sequence makes the effort seem all the more tragic. This might be Lizzy’s most complex offering to date. Check out My Midnight Things and let the entrancing vibes of Lizzy Borden become an obsession for you! \m/
