Innovation is not what makes Gravewards special, its execution. This is a band that understands what classic death metal is supposed to sound like.

I personally love ‘90s death metal. An evolution of thrash, this music became the next level of extremity. As a result, many of the classic / pioneering death metal acts were initially more interested in melody than speed. There was a complexity in their musical punishment that’s been lost in today’s worship of supercharged velocity.

Gravewards is from Athens, Greece and has been active since 2015. If you like ‘90s death metal this is a group worthy of your attention. Gravewards is reinterpretation of a classic style. In the vein of European acts sharing America’s unorthodox mentality, the end result is a mid-tempo attack full of groovy gore. The whole Subconscious Lobotomy EP holds a trampling vibe, one that holds you under foot and keeps you there. Highlight tracks for me are: “Crawling Chaos”, “Casket Entrapment” and “Subconscious Lobotomy”.

Innovation is not what makes Gravewards special, its execution. This is a band that understands what classic death metal is supposed to sound like. A solid step in musical evolution, I personally cannot wait to hear what this group does next. Check out this debut effort by Gravewards and let this motley assault scramble your brains! \m/
